Settlement with Revere Announced

The City of Revere will significantly reduce the amount of untreated sewage discharges (CSO's, SSO's) entering the Mystic River Watershed. This Consent Decree comes after years of reported illicit discharges, and is brought upon by federal and state enforcement agencies.

"Under this settlement, the City of Revere will undertake much needed upgrades to how they manage wastewater, resulting in significant improvements to the waters directly impacted, and to the Mystic River Watershed,” said Curt Spalding, regional administrator of EPA’s New England region. “This will mean a cleaner and healthier environment for the City’s people and those living downstream of Revere.”

Tackling Water Chestnut

Water Chestnut HarvesterHave you seen bright orange machines navigating the Mystic? They are mechanical harvesters working to remove the invasive water chestnut from the Mystic River. This project is part of a three year effort by Groundwork Somerville, Friends of the Mystic River, Medford Boat Club, Riverside Yacht Club, Winter Hill Yacht Club, and Mystic Wellington Yacht Club. Mechanical harvesting is just one component in the effort that includes extensive hand harvesting of the water chestnut by community members, Green Teams and AmeriCorps. The mechanical harvesting took place for 10 days, filling many, many dumpsters.

View a video of the mechanical harvester here.

Volunteers remove water chestnutOn Saturday, August 28th over 30 volunteers joined Groundwork Somerville,  the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, in an effort to remove invasive water chestnut from the Mystic River in Medford. Using canoes, kayaks, and small boats, volunteers pulled the plants out of the water by hand. After 4 hours of working, volunteers removed 372 baskets of water chestnuts - no small feat! That's at least 7,500 pounds of plant material that will be sent to a local compost facility. Thanks to all who participated!

Shannon Beach Improvements

Shannon Beach Aug2010 (2)The Mystic River Watershed Association is talking with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to determine improvements to Shannon Beach and its facilities. This follows a 2009 Shigellosis outbreak at the beach. Additionally, staff and volunteers are gathering user information at the Winchester beach through a survey. Project partners include Tri-CAP and La Comunidad, Inc.

MyRWA Completes Youth Workshops

LMI_Cheslea Collab_ECO_8.10 (2)Over the course of the summer, MyRWA staff undertook several workshops with youth from Everett, Chelsea, East Boston and Cambridge. The intent of the workshops was to introduce the youth to common water quality measurements through hands-on exploration of a local body of water. Measurements of dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, ammonia, conductivity, water temperature and observations of the local flora and fauna were recorded.

Invasive Mile a Minute Vine Alert

MAM_bugwood_5273091_fruit-720745Another invasive species now inhabits the Mystic River Watershed. The Mile A Minute vine, has been identified in Medford. This Asian vine can grow up to 6 inches a day, and is commonly dispersed by birds and deer who feed on its seeds. The vine often grows along the sides of roads, grassy areas, wetlands and forested woods. It can form a dense mat and grow 30 feet up a tree.

Be ALERT! Please review the Mile A Minute fact sheet and reporting form.

1. Weekend Racing Tomorrow and Sunday August 28th and 29th
by posted 08/27/2010

Dear MBC members,
the MBC Sail Race series are coming to an end for the season. This weekend will be a great last blast!

1. The end of season race series for Junior Sailors (normally referred to as the "Labor Day Series" will take place tomorrow and Sunday morning. Rigging starts at 9 am and the first race will start at 10 am. We will run races until 12 noon. As always we will have slush afterwards for all racers and chat about the sailing and what we can learn. This is our last Junior series before the club closes so come down and sail or see what our sailors have learned over the Summer's season. We have seen an average of 12-14 N10s sail in our weekend races this Summer. Let's see if we can top that.

2. Don't forget the Sail and Swim Awards and Festivities on Sunday. These will start after the morning racing with a Dress up your boat parade at 12:30. Please see the webblast sent/posted August 25th. This will be great fun.

3.
-The senior N10 club championship races will take place Saturday afternoon; first start at 130 pm.
-The Mystic Lake N-10 Open (open to sailors of all ages, 10-100) will take place Sunday 29th August 2010. First race to start at 130 pm

4. Finally, we must have privately owned sail boats removed from the MBC premises by Labor Day (the DCR Dam repair contractor are moving in the following day and will remain until next Spring!). Labor Day weekend is going to be very hectic and we are recommending that members plan to have their boats removed by September 3rd.

Thanks and best regards

Lots of volunteer opportunities posted at the Club.  Hope you will join in the fun!

You are invited to attend this fun and rewarding upcoming event to h elp remove the invasive water chestnut.

Saturday, August 28th
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
75 South St. Medford

Groundwork Somerville, with support from the Mystic River Watershed Association and the Friends of the Mystic River, will host a community event focusing on the removal of invasive water chestnut from the Mystic River.

Using canoes, kayaks, and small boats, volunteers will pull the plants out of the water by hand and then deposit the harvested water chestnut at a designated shore site. (The pulled plants will then be composted at a nearby landscaping facility.)

If you have a canoe or a kayak, you can bring your own. If you need a boat, Groundwork Somerville may be able to provide you with one (thanks to the generous cooperation of the Boys and Girls Club of Middlesex County).  We only have 20 canoes available for volunteers, so please RSVP as soon as possible.  Canoes are available on a first come, first served basis.

Volunteers should meet at 8:30 AM at the old DCR boat ramp adjacent to 75 South Street in Medford.  A limited amount of parking is available on South Street; additional parking is available on nearby Curtis Street, Maple Ave, Touro Ave, and Manning Street.

If you plan to attend this event, please RSVP by email to or by phone at (617) 455-1127.  If you will need a canoe, please indicate that in your RSVP.

This event is sponsored by Groundwork Somerville, with support from the Mystic River Watershed Association, the Friends of the Mystic River, the Riverside, Mystic Wellington, and Winter Hill Yachts Clubs, and the Medford Boat Club.

Please Note: We need both boaters to pull water chestnut and riverbank helpers to take the plants out of the boats. Boaters are required to use life preservers/personal flotation devices.

Shut-Down Activities - Volunteer Sign-up has begun
by posted 08/21/2010

To our Members,

At the Executive Board meeting Wednesday night, Work Hours coordinator Joe Nargi reported that over 40% of the membership has yet to perform one work hour for the 2010 season.  While this may seem awful to some, the Labor Day shut-down team sees this as a wonderful opportunity!  The Club needs your help during this historic closing season as we attempt to squeeze SIX weekends of closing activities into ONE weekend over the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

This will be your last real opportunity to get those hours in before your 2010 hours show up on your 2011 invoice.  There are sign-up sheets in the main hall for volunteers to commit to working (Please do not sign unless you are sure you can make it -you might take up a space that another volunteer may be able to fill!) We encourage you to bring along work gloves and any light tools you may like to use.

We need help washing furniture, emptying lockers, transporting kayaks, moving picnic tables, removing kayak racks, moving and storing docks, grills, landscaping equipment, club boats, awnings, and much more!  If you can see it some where in the Club, we need to secure it before the contractors arrive on Tuesday morning.

Labor Day Saturday will be a fun-filled day, but volunteers are needed for some events that day as well, for sellling raffle tickets and MBC clothing and other goodies.

Stop in today and sign up to help in any way you can.  Remember...all members completing their 2010 work hours by Monday, Sept 6 at 5 PM will be entered into a drawing to earn a free year of work hours for the 2011 season.

Working together for the MBC!

DCR Dam Phase 2 - Member Update vol. 2
by posted 08/13/2010

Staff Appreciation Night Dessert!
To Our Members,

Labor Day weekend is just around the corner and the countdown to DCR DAM, Phase 2 has begun.  In preparation for our September 6th closing, the Shut Down Committee has formulated a general plan of closing activities that will allow for families to have a final celebration day on Saturday; a day for removing kayaks, boats, and locker contents on Sunday; and a heavy work day on Monday.  As promised, here is an update to help you make your own plans for the last week of 2010 Medford Boat Club fun.

Friday/Saturday will be our Labor Day celebration days.  The weekend will start with an exciting junior dance on Friday evening.  Saturday will feature our annual Steak by the Lake dinner, the Fun in the Sun Raffle (win next year’s dues!), a junior prize raffle, bocce, and beach dancing to tunes spun by member DJ, Mike Burke.

On early Sunday, the real fun starts.  Beginning bright and early, Past Commodore Rick Orlando will direct the removal of the pavilion tent and the front awning, and member Ginny Lawrence will lead a group of eager volunteers as all of the white Club tables, chairs, and umbrellas are washed, dried and stored for the season.  (Should you plan to visit on Sunday, please use the wooden picnic tables in the grove and pavilion areas and bring your own personal beach chairs.) The Club will open at 9 AM each weekend day for general member use.

Again, all boats must be off Club property by Monday.  With the Club in full party mode on Saturday, boat trailers and the removal of hoisted boats is being strongly discouraged that day.  Sunday will be the easiest day to on which to remove watercraft. There will be extra staff members on duty on Sunday to assist with carrying kayaks to the Medford side parking lot.  Out of respect for our Arlington neighbors, please avoid using the Arlington side to access the Club as much as possible to remove kayaks.

Joe Nargi, our 2010 Work Hours Coordinator, has asked us to remind members that all work hours need to be completed by the end of September to avoid a charge on your next year’s invoice.  Every member family completing its work hours by Monday will be entered into the 2010 Work Hours Raffle to win a year off of work hour service for the 2011 season.  Please check the service record outside of the main office to see if your volunteer hours have been correctly recorded to date.  Drawing will be at the end of the work day on Monday, September 6th.

Here are the first of many volunteer opportunities on the docket for the upcoming close-down of the Club.  Please sign up only if you can make a serious commitment to these projects – every volunteer is essential to a successful shutdown and will make our opening that much easier in 2011.  Watch for more volunteer announcements in the next few days.  To volunteer for the following two activities, please contact the coordinator directly

  • 12 volunteers (a few strong guys, especially) are needed to wash and store all Club tables, chairs and umbrellas on Sunday, September 5, from 8 AM – 1 PM.  Please contact Ginny Lawrence directly at
  • 6 volunteers are needed to help remove and properly store the front awning and pavilion tent on Sunday morning, beginning at 8 AM – email Rick Orlando at
Monday will be a heavy work day – cleaning and storing grills and equipment, emptying lockers, moving and securing docks, picnic tables, and club boats -- but many hands make light work!  Volunteer sign-up sheets will be posted soon.  Don’t forget your work gloves!

On another note, Peter and Mary Wells and their staff have done a wonderful job again feeding our Club at the Li’l Galley this summer. The Li’l Galley will be open all day Labor Day Saturday, but will close for the season Saturday night to allow for proper end-of-season cleaning.  Thank you for another super season, Mary and Peter!

Finally, Staff Appreciation Night this past Wednesday honored our forty-plus 2010 staff members with an evening of fun, food, ice cream sundaes, tubing on the lake, and generous gifts donated by many grateful members.  Thank-you to all members who volunteered to work, and to those who donated to this special night for our staff.  Everyone had a great time!

Kayaks! Kayaks! Kayaks!
by posted 08/09/2010

A couple of BIG reminders to all Kayak owners and users:

1.  SAFETY  Safe boating is every user's responsibility. All kayak users must be in properly-fitted life jackets and must have passed the swim test before taking a kayak off the MBC dock.  (MBC Water Safety Instructors are happy to administer the swim test during non-lesson hours.)  Club swim instructors are on the dock to watch and teach our young swimmers, not to police the entire lake for kayakers.  Parents, please know your child's skills and limitations when giving them permission to use a kayak.

2.  OWNERSHIP  There are no Club-owned kayaks.  All kayaks are personal property of the owner.  You must have that owner's permission to use another member's vessel, paddles, and equipment.  Please encourage and remind your family members and guests to respect all personal property.

3.  REGISTRATION  Kayaks must have a current sticker indicating that their storage fee has been paid for 2010.  Kayaks without stickers will be removed from racks and may be removed from the club without further notice.  (There are a few unregistered kayaks being stored near the dumpster that were recently culled from the racks.)

3.  RESPONSIBILITY  You are responsible for your kayak and for its safe usage and storage at the MBC.  Kayaks may not be left on the sail dock or in the water when not in use.  Please be sure to store and secure your vessel and related equipment properly before leaving the Club.

Kayak storage is at a premium at the MBC.  Members who chose to disrespect the rules risk the loss of future storage and use privileges.  Please do your part so everyone can enjoy our beautiful Mystic Lakes.

Thank you.

DCR Dam Restoration Project (Phase 2) begins 9/7/10
by posted 08/01/2010

DCR Dam Restoration Project (Phase 2) begins 9/7/10

To All MBC Members,

As you know, the Medford Boat Club will be the primary work site for Phase 2 of the DCR Dam restoration project beginning in September. The planned changes will widen the dam, correcting longstanding deficiencies and improving the overall condition of the primary spillway which was built in the mid 1800’s.

Phase 2 will directly impact the Club in numerous ways. There will be physical changes to the Club grounds which will help stabilize the Dam for years to come. The old spillway will be restored, the bridge will be rebuilt, and our shore along the upper Mystic Lake will be heavily reinforced. It is also true that the Club will be losing its shade trees along the entrance walkway; trees and their root systems can undermine earthen dams in many ways and are not allowed by current engineering standards.

The more immediate impact on the Club and to our members will be felt as we prepare to close for the 2010 season. Commodore Paul Garland and Past Commodore Rick Orlando have organized a shut-down team to coordinate and condense the many activities necessary for closing the Club for the season. This team of members, familiar with the normal Club’s shut down process, has begun to formulate a work schedule that will prepare the Club for the contractor’s arrival on September 7th, while allowing members to get the most out of our remaining five weeks of the 2010 season.

Our first order of business is to keep our membership informed. Beginning today, August 1st, you will receive a weekly email update with the schedule of events and any plans as they become more defined. This notice will also be prominently posted at the Club.

During our most recent meeting with representatives with the DCR and the engineering firm, we were notified that the contractor plans to arrive on site on the Tuesday morning after Labor Day to secure the property, bring in some heavy equipment, and begin the removal of the trees between the Club and the bridge. As agreed, there will be NO MEMBER ACCESS to the Club after Labor Day Monday, with the exception of the shut-down team; ALL access after September 6th will be under direction of, and with the approval of, the state contractor.

For the 2010 season only, ALL SAILBOATS, KAYAKS, POWERBOATS, and PERSONAL ITEMS MUST BE REMOVED FROM CLUB PREMISES BY 6 PM ON MONDAY, September 6th. Lockers must also be completely emptied and all contents removed from the Club by that date as well. We ask that you not wait until the holiday weekend to begin the removal process, if at all possible, to avoid a logjam on Labor Day Monday. Your cooperation is essential and greatly appreciated. Please be advised: any vessel remaining on site, including those on moorings or in slips, may be subject to significant daily fines if not out of the Club by Labor Day. All lockers will be opened and their contents discarded, no exceptions. Again, the contractor will be changing the locks on all gates on Tuesday morning, September 7th. We must be securely shut down for the season at that time.

MBC Labor Day Weekend festivities, including Steak by the Lake, the Junior Dance, and other family activities will go on, however they are being compressed into one big celebration on Saturday. Watch for the final schedule soon from MBC Entertainment. Sunday is being reserved for boat and kayak removals; additional staff members will be on hand to assist you in loading your kayaks on the Medford side to keep traffic down on the Arlington side.

Monday is Labor Day…and labor is just what we plan to do! Instead of picnicking, there will be work parties all day, beginning bright and early Monday morning. We have a load of work to do before the contractor arrives - all adult hands are welcome! Due to the amount of heavy work being planned, there will be no general member use of the Club on Monday, September 6th. Please plan accordingly. Volunteers are asked to leave children at home as the work site will not be suitable for youngsters; there will also be no water safety staff members on duty. Shut-down activities will include:

- Removal of front awning and pavilion tent canvases

- Removal and storage of all patio tables, chairs, and umbrellas

- Moving and storage of all picnic tables, equipment storage lockers, grills, etc.

- Emptying personal lockers, organizing and storing equipment, and cleaning the Clubhouse

- Removal of all remaining vessels, including Club boats

- Assisting with the close up of the Li’l Galley, plus much, much more!

The 2010 season has been a unique one so far. Our Memorial Day opening enabled members to enjoy the Club three weeks earlier than the traditional season would normally allow. We know we can count on your understanding and cooperation as we close up shop a bit early this year in preparation for Phase 2 of the Dam safety project.

We also hope we can count on your participation during this historic close-up at the MBC. Work hour completion opportunities will abound in the upcoming weeks; please join in to make our shut-down efforts effective and worthwhile. Watch for announcements on line and at the Club. As a reminder, all work hours must be completed by October.

Your continuing support of the MBC is essential as we close the books on the 2010 season and plan for an exciting 2011.

With much appreciation,

The MBC Executive Committee

DCR Spillway Project
by posted 01/19/2009

By now most of you have probably heard something about the DCR Spillway reconstruction project.  The flag officers (Commodore, Vice Commodore and Rear Commodore) have been in constant communication with the DCR team regarding the project.  We are acting in the best interest of the club and the DCR team has been very accommodating.  However, until final approval is given to the project, nothing is going to happen.  I would be happy to answer (where I can) any concerns and/or questions that you may have.

Paul Garland
Vice Commodore

Phone Number Change
by posted 08/07/2008

For many years we had a phone in the club office as well as a pay phone.  It was the pay phone number that was given out by 411 if you asked for a number for the Medford Boat Club.  This year we removed the pay phone and are using only the office phone now.  However, it came to our attention recently that 411 is still giving out the old pay phone number, which no longer exists.

If you need to call the club, the correct (and only) number is now:

Medford Boat Club Office
781-648-8726
