CenTX Wing Lands PAC-12 Offer

(By Antonio G. Castillo)

When evaluating prospects there are certain physical traits and skill sets that must be present in order to classify whether the talent being watched is a low, mid, or high major player. At the wing position, sheer athleticism is a must, height, length, foot speed, the ability to shoot, slash-finish, and defend, are what you look for in a high major player.

Those are all traits that 6’7” Dylan Disu (Pflugerville Hendrickson) possesses, and is still improving on each day. The junior closed this past summer with a bang, and jumped onto the radars of coaching staffs across Texas, and the rest of the country.

Most recently, Stanford Head Coach Jerod Haase let the talented wing know, that he was wanted in Palo Alto (CA), and has an offer on the table to join one of the best basketball conferences in the country.

“They (Stanford) originally reached out to me at the GASO in July. They talked to me a lot since then. Coach Haase came down and watched me practice. He went back to Cali, called me last night (Wednesday) and offered,” said Disu. “It was really surprising, I didn't expect them to offer this quick. It's crazy to think that I have an offer from the PAC-12 conference, one of the better conferences in all of college basketball.”

The Cardinal are Disu’s second offer. Northern Colorado offered him a few weeks back and were the first program to fully buy into the rising wingman. Since the D1 contact period started back in early September, multiple programs have watched or been in touch with Dylan. Rice, Sam Houston State, UTSA, Pepperdine, Kansas State, Texas State, and Yale, are just some of the teams keenly watching.

It was during July that our AlamoCityHoops staff personally saw Disu in multiple games, and came away impressed every time. His length, the way he glides up and down the floor, his ability to drain the outside shot, from beyond the 3-point line, and then use his quickness to attack off the dribble and finish above the rim. Disu is quick to thank his trainer and AAU team for helping his game steadily improve.

“I've been playing basketball for a while, I played on our 16U team (THP Elite) last year. We were more focused on our 17U team this year, I was just put in the right spot at the right times. I also grew like 3-4 inches since last summer,” said Disu. “I also give a lot of credit to my trainer, Zach Urbanas. He’s been working with me on my shooting ability, getting into the lane, and becoming a stronger finisher.”

Entering the fall, Dylan was the biggest climber in our 2019 Tri-Regions Super 30 rankings. Going from unranked, all the way to #8. Admittedly, he does keep a distant eye on where publications have him ranked, but fully understands it’s not the be all, end all.

“It really motivates me, I want to put my name out there. I want people to know who I am. It makes me want to work harder to be sure that people do know who I am. Rankings are great, it's amazing I've been ranked so high, but in the end, it comes down to whether I can play against top guys around the state of Texas and the country.”

Be sure to take note, as hard as he works off the court, he replicates that in the classroom. That’s why elite academic schools such as Stanford, Rice, and Yale, are hot on his trail. Disu currently holds a 3.97 GPA, and is ranked #65 out of 860 students. Good enough to sit in the Top 8% of his class.

“I've gotten invitations to Honor Society, I take academics very seriously, it’s my core values and school has to have academic prestige. Academics has always played a huge role in my family. The number one priority in school is academics, a very close second is basketball.”

Only a junior, Disu and his talented Hendrickson teammates are primed and ready for what they hope will be a solid season and deep run in District 13-6A. Opponents will undoubtedly have their hands full with Dylan, but the Hawks also feature Isaac Bullard and Sean Walker, two other talented juniors, ranked #11 and #29, respectively, in our 2019 rankings.
